Ripple - Modulated Tape Echo.
An analog-voiced digital delay utilizing the PT2399 chip. It simulates tube tape echo sounds by using the delay circuit and a little bit of modulation. It's very warm and natural, using a touch of Lo-Fi delay, a slightly filtered echo response to keep things warm, and some modulation. In a real tape echo, "Wow and Flutter” is the modulation is a slight pitch shift or wavering that occurs as the tape is pulled across the heads. Here, a wavering of pitch similar to a chorus is added to the trails on the repeats. This circuit is based on the Magnetic Echo by Keeley.
Delay controls:
TIME: sets the length between your repeats between 40ms and 600ms. This range is well suited for classic, vintage delay sounds that are great for slap-back or medium length delay times
REGEN: sets the number of repeats. You can set this for a single slap back echo or turn it up for a runaway, self-oscillating or self-regenerating echoes. (Now go back and twist the Time control for some crazy sounds!)
LEVEL: how loud you want the repeats to be. (this doesn’t affect the dry signal).
"Wow and Flutter Controls":
DEPTH: Turn this control to achieve deeper and deeper chorusing and pitch shifting on your echoes. As you raise the control the Depth and Rate LED will start to glow giving you a visual indication as to the amount of modulation you are applying to the repeats.
Speed: This is your Flutter control. It’s another way to control how “poorly” your tape echo is performing! Not that any tape deck was ever in this bad of condition, but it sure sounds good to have a little pitch modulation on your echo! Using these controls gives you a nice way to create unique and very musical delays.
For the design, I was inspired by my favorite song from the Grateful Dead, the feel of a ripple in still water. You can make it peaceful and subtle, a single drip at a time.... Or not: throw a barrel of hot slag in the pool and try to keep up.

From The Builder:
A middle school teacher with a workshop in my basement, spraying things in the garage when weather allows. My daughter taught me to solder in 2019 (after being in robotics club in high school....NERD!), and I've been building pedals ever since. The circuits are based on existing pedals (I'm always up front about which), but it's the finishing that's quirky, with unique (occasionally odd) designs. Minor imperfections are par for the course and part of the charm.
Each design is one-of-a-kind, which means NO ONE ELSE will ever have this pedal but you. Hope you enjoy!
