Have a passive StingRay or other bass? Wish you had the ability to add the legendary late 1970s StingRay preamp easily and affordably? Want to add some funky style to your pedalboard?
Presenting the Ray in a Box! This pedal is a faithful reproduction of the original 1977 Music Man StingRay preamp, as designed by the legendary Leo Fender and Tom Walker, with its characteristic sizzle and range. All components are to vintage spec including the now-discontinued LM4250CN opamp that gives it its signature tone.
The pedal is professionally-manufactured and is compatible with all basses, but will especially shine when paired directly with a passive bass with a Music Man-style humbucker.
Features:
* Vintage-spec reproduction of a 1977 Music Man StingRay preamp with volume, bass and treble knobs
* Easy to use pedal that's designed to be first in the chain so as to accurately capture that vintage StingRay tone that everyone is chasing (see notes below)
* Affordable and easy way for passive StingRay owners (shortscale, Ray2, Tim Commerford Signature Passive, Pete Wentz Signature, Joe Dart Signature, etc) to add a vintage-spec StingRay preamp
* Fabulous metallic purple enclosure with pink underglow lighting that really stands out
Preamp characteristics:
Bass boost/cut (+14dB/-7dB at 40Hz)
Treble boost/cut (+20dB/-16dB at 10kHz)
Low power draw (~100uA at 9V)
Usage notes:
The pedal is an unusually designed preamp as Leo Fender designed it to obtain a particular sound. It is designed to be in a series resonance circuit with a vintage-spec Music Man StingRay humbucker. It will work best when attached directly to the bass as the first pedal in the chain.
This is also why there is no bypass switch, as any kind of buffered input will break the series resonance circuit with the humbucker.
Now, it will work just fine if it's not the first pedal, but you won't have the full treble range and the pedal will have a slightly "darker" sound than if it's directly connected. Same also if you connect it to a bass using higher impedance pickups (like P or J-style). Still sounds great and has a great range, but your resonance peak will be lower and you won't get all of the sizzling highs that are possible on a vintage StingRay.
