Eyas MOSFET Fuzz
Eyas MOSFET Fuzz
by Palmetto Pedals
Ever since I started building pedals I've been intrigued - even fascinated - by how MOSFETs can be used in guitar pedals (nerd alert!!!).
The second pedal I built was a double SHO, also known as a Super Duper 2-in-1. If you haven't tried one, do it. It's so simple yet so satisfying to slam a cranked up hi-fi signal from one MOSFET boost into another. From then on I've been chasing a MOSFET fuzz design that shares a similar ragged, overblown fuzz tone with a little more versatility.
The Eyas MOSFET Fuzz is a wide-range gain solution for those seeking a raw, wild fuzz pedal.
From a snarling treble boost to a cutting distortion, from creamy leads to an unwieldy doom fuzz, the Eyas soars above existing definitions and delineations between "overdrive," "distortion," and "fuzz,"
The Eyas maximizes versatility via three knobs and three switches. Volume and Gain operate as expected. The Tone knob is similar to a Rat filter - turn it to the left to tame the highs.
Along with the Tone knob are two switches - a Scoop switch and a Bright switch.
The Scoop switch selects between a scooped, SuperFuzz-style tone (up), a mid-pushed tone (down), and flat mids (center).
The Bright switch alters the input response of the first gain stage. With the gain low, the Bright switch pushes the highs for a treble boost (up), can tame the clang (down), or cuts high end for a bass-forward tone (center). At higher gain the Bright switch becomes more subtle as the fuzz takes over.
At the top is a Mode switch. This selects between full-range overdrive-to-fuzz operation (down) and a fuzz eruption (up). In Full Blast mode the controls make some attempt to tame the maelstrom of gain but are mostly overwhelmed by pure cascading MOSFET glory. The Bright switch is best kept in the Dark (center) position here as it can oscillate in the other positions (maybe you like that?).
Playing through the Eyas evokes a feeling captured by John Denver in these lyrics:
"I am the Eagle, I live in my country -
a rocky cathedral that reaches to the sky.
I am the Hawk, and there's blood on my feathers -
but time is still turning, they soon will be dry.
All those who see me, and all who believe in me,
share in the freedom I feel when I fly."
Powered by a 9V Boss-standard center-negative power supply. Features a soft-touch footswitch with mechanical relay true-bypass.
